神話時代（Age of Mythology）是ES工作組繼帝國時代系列之後的最新作品，全新的3D畫面、不同的游戲風格和文化氛圍，與前作征服者相比有著較明顯的差異。
神話時代以壯麗的古代神話作為游戲的背景，選擇了人類歷史上的著名的希臘、北歐、埃及等三個文明，這一創意似乎受到了星際爭霸的影響。曾有徵服者的玩家抱怨說，帝國系列游戲的文明過於接近，征服者的18個文明都是大同小異的「地球族」。神話時代在文明設定上與前作截然不同，各個文明的建築、士兵、英雄、神力等等，並無重復之處。希臘人的經濟軍事繼承原有的帝國2風格，各類兵種與對抗兵種非常齊全，有著大家所熟悉的劍士、長槍兵、騎兵、弓箭手等等，希臘人類軍團的實力是三個文明中最強的，當然訓練的價格也是最高的。埃及是經濟強於軍事的文明，他們的倉庫和磨房等經濟建築不需要耗費任何資源即可修建，埃及人的農田、城鎮中心、神廟等重要建築需要耗費黃金而不是傳統意義上的木材，他們從第一時代就可以建造農田，同時也將是最早開采黃金的文明。埃及的兵種構成類似於羅馬雄風，有諸如駱駝騎兵、投石兵、戰車等等，埃及的巫師在經濟和軍事上都占據了非常重要的地位，這在以下的文章中會詳細介紹。北歐人也許是神話時代中最適合快攻的文明，他們擁有相當巨大的早期經濟優勢，在游戲一開始就可以研究各種經濟科技，北歐人也不需要建造固定的資源收集建築，他們可以將不同的資源送回到可移動的牛車上。北歐文明的軍事以步兵為主，訓練費用普遍較低，因此能輕易建立起龐大的軍隊。
神話時代的經濟體系有一個明顯的變化，即取消了石料資源，加入了恩惠（Favor）這一新概念。所有的神話兵種和神話科技都要消耗恩惠，取得恩惠的速度往往是獲取勝利的重要因素。各文明獲取恩惠的方式不同，希臘人獲得恩惠的辦法是派村民在神殿祈禱，祈禱中的村民無法建造和工作，派去的村民越多，恩惠增加的速度越快；埃及人獲得恩惠的辦法是建造不同的紀念碑，這種方法的好處是相對穩定，在紀念碑建成以後就會比較穩定地增加恩惠值，不必再耗費人力；北歐人以戰爭方式獲取恩惠，只有通過消滅或殺傷敵人的士兵、摧毀敵人的建築等行為才能取悅於好戰的神明。
其他的經濟資源包括食物、木材和黃金，玩家可以通過採集漿果、狩獵、畜牧、種田來收集食物，這些都和前作頗為類似，值得一提的是，神話時代中出現了多種不同的動物，有羚羊、野豬、水牛、奶牛、鱷魚、鹿、大象、馴鹿、山羊、獅子、猴子、雞、北極熊、豬、麋鹿、鯊魚、海豹、鯨魚、狼、斑馬、長頸鹿等等20多種。
神話時代中各文明之間唯一相同的只有基礎經濟科技（研究地點不同）和軍事科技（鐵匠鋪），研究希臘和埃及文明的經濟科技需要建造不同的建築，北歐人沒有類似的建築，他們從一開始就可以在牛車里研究各類經濟科技。這些科技包括3個級別的採金技術和伐木技術，每完成一級研究項目，對應資源的採集速度能夠增加10%，負載量增加50%（神話時代中，村民對應不同資源的負載量是不同的），和食物相關的科技有獵犬（Hunting Dogs）：狩獵速度加快30%；畜牧業（Husbandry）：從馴養的動物處獲得食物的速度加快20%，負載量加倍；以及傳統的3個級別的農田科技，每級科技能提升30%的耕作速度。神話時代中的農田產量是無限的，這有助於玩家集中精力投入激烈的戰斗。
神話時代的軍事結構由村民、戰艦、攻城器械、普通士兵、英雄以及神話兵種組成，作為以神話故事為背景的游戲，理所當然地出現了不少神話傳說中的生物，例如希臘神話中的半人馬、飛馬佩格薩斯、蛇發女妖美杜沙，埃及神話中的木乃伊和北歐神話中的諸多巨人和猛獸，這些生物往往體形龐大，具有相當高的HP值、攻擊力和一些特殊的本領。原本只出現在征服者單人戰役中的英雄兵種成為了三個文明不可缺少的軍事力量。英雄是強化的普通士兵，希臘人在每個時代可以在城鎮中心或城堡內訓練一名英雄，有著名的赫拉克勒斯、忒修斯、珀耳修斯等等，他們分別是步兵、弓箭手、騎兵甚至是海上英雄單位，阿爾戈號。英雄能夠搬運聖跡（Relic）並將其送回神廟，他們適合對抗神話兵種，有著很高的攻防加成和一些特殊本領。埃及的英雄不僅僅是對神話兵種有攻擊優勢的士兵，他們擔任著更為重要的角色。埃及的英雄有法老和祭司，法老只能有一名，他可以在城鎮中心無限復活，祭司則沒有什麼數量上的限制。埃及文明在游戲開局就擁有一名法老和一名祭司，祭司的訓練價格非常高，在對抗普通士兵時顯得力不從心。法老的戰鬥力遠比祭司強大，但在眾多的人類士兵面前也是無計可施。法老和祭司的重要用途是對抗敵方的神話兵種，以及對本方部隊的治療，包括各種攻城器械、戰艦和造價昂貴的神話兵種。法老還具有對建築物工作效率進行「加速」的能力，當法老為某個建築加速時，該建築的工作效率將提高20%，單位訓練速度加快，科技的研究速度會相應地得到提升，紀念碑收集恩惠的速度也會加快，甚至村民交還到建築內的資源也會出現增長。如果正在「加速」的建築還未完工，那麼法老可以加快它的建築速度。法老無法改變的只有村民的訓練速度和時代的升級。祭司和法老一樣擁有遠距離攻擊、治療能力和對神話兵種的巨大優勢，祭司還可以建造一種高塔，以便更好地偵察附近敵情，這種高塔的建造價格非常低，而且能夠在瞬間完成。在擁有了神廟以後，還可以從城鎮中心訓練祭司，埃及人的每個主神賦予祭司一種特殊能力，拉（Ra）的祭司能夠像法老一樣對建築物進行加速，依西斯（Isis）建造紀念碑的速度較快，塞特（Set）的祭司可以招降野生動物。北歐的英雄雖然在強度上遜色於希臘英雄，但在數量上佔有很大的優勢，他們可以同時擁有多個英雄，北歐的英雄是赫瑟戰士，他們並不象希臘英雄那麼勇猛，移動速度也不是很快，但在對抗神話兵種時卻能發揮顯著的作用，因此用神話兵種去對付北歐人不是明智的選擇。保持一隊北歐英雄就能夠緩慢地增加恩惠，如果將他們投入戰場，他們能比普通士兵更快的積累恩惠。所有文明的英雄都能夠拾取聖物。
鐵匠鋪里保留了傳統的對應於普通士兵和英雄的軍事科技，銅/青銅/鐵器的武器和防具升級，每項升級可以使士兵的攻擊力或防禦力提高10%。
神話時代中，最能引起玩家注意的莫過於新增加的神力，各文明隨著時代的進步可以獲得不同的神力，有些神力可以強化作戰單位的能力，有些能夠提升村民工作的效率，還有一些恐怖的神力能讓敵人喪失戰力。每一位主神和他的從屬神明都有獨一無二的神力，在游戲中，玩家可以獲得總共4種神力，每個時代獲得一種，當然，你不必在獲得神力後馬上就用掉他，你可以保存起來留到關鍵的時刻使用。每種神力都只能使用一次，因此玩家必須注意把握好適當的時機來取得最大的收益。除了神力以外，每個主神和附屬神明都擁有不同的文明優勢、獨特科技以及不同的神話兵種，這些單位和科技都需要足夠的恩惠才可以訓練和研究
