神话时代以壮丽的古代神话作为游戏的背景，选择了人类历史上的着名的希腊、北欧、埃及等三个文明，这一创意似乎受到了星际争霸的影响。曾有征服者的玩家抱怨说，帝国系列游戏的文明过于接近，征服者的18个文明都是大同小异的“地球族”。神话时代在文明设定上与前作截然不同，各个文明的建筑、士兵、英雄、神力等等，并无重复之处。希腊人的经济军事继承原有的帝国2风格，各类兵种与对抗兵种非常齐全，有着大家所熟悉的剑士、长枪兵、骑兵、弓箭手等等，希腊人类军团的实力是三个文明中最强的，当然训练的价格也是最高的。埃及是经济强于军事的文明，他们的仓库和磨房等经济建筑不需要耗费任何资源即可修建，埃及人的农田、城镇中心、神庙等重要建筑需要耗费黄金而不是传统意义上的木材，他们从第一时代就可以建造农田，同时也将是最早开采黄金的文明。埃及的兵种构成类似于罗马雄风，有诸如骆驼骑兵、投石兵、战车等等，埃及的巫师在经济和军事上都占据了非常重要的地位，这在以下的文章中会详细介绍。北欧人也许是神话时代中最适合快攻的文明，他们拥有相当巨大的早期经济优势，在游戏一开始就可以研究各种经济科技，北欧人也不需要建造固定的资源收集建筑，他们可以将不同的资源送回到可移动的牛车上。北欧文明的军事以步兵为主，训练费用普遍较低，因此能轻易建立起庞大的军队。
神话时代的经济体系有一个明显的变化，即取消了石料资源，加入了恩惠（Favor）这一新概念。所有的神话兵种和神话科技都要消耗恩惠，取得恩惠的速度往往是获取胜利的重要因素。各文明获取恩惠的方式不同，希腊人获得恩惠的办法是派村民在神殿祈祷，祈祷中的村民无法建造和工作，派去的村民越多，恩惠增加的速度越快；埃及人获得恩惠的办法是建造不同的纪念碑，这种方法的好处是相对稳定，在纪念碑建成以后就会比较稳定地增加恩惠值，不必再耗费人力；北欧人以战争方式获取恩惠，只有通过消灭或杀伤敌人的士兵、摧毁敌人的建筑等行为才能取悦于好战的神明。
其他的经济资源包括食物、木材和黄金，玩家可以通过采集浆果、狩猎、畜牧、种田来收集食物，这些都和前作颇为类似，值得一提的是，神话时代中出现了多种不同的动物，有羚羊、野猪、水牛、奶牛、鳄鱼、鹿、大象、驯鹿、山羊、狮子、猴子、鸡、北极熊、猪、麋鹿、鲨鱼、海豹、鲸鱼、狼、斑马、长颈鹿等等20多种。
神话时代中各文明之间唯一相同的只有基础经济科技（研究地点不同）和军事科技（铁匠铺），研究希腊和埃及文明的经济科技需要建造不同的建筑，北欧人没有类似的建筑，他们从一开始就可以在牛车里研究各类经济科技。这些科技包括3个级别的采金技术和伐木技术，每完成一级研究项目，对应资源的采集速度能够增加10%，负载量增加50%（神话时代中，村民对应不同资源的负载量是不同的），和食物相关的科技有猎犬（Hunting Dogs）：狩猎速度加快30%；畜牧业（Husbandry）：从驯养的动物处获得食物的速度加快20%，负载量加倍；以及传统的3个级别的农田科技，每级科技能提升30%的耕作速度。神话时代中的农田产量是无限的，这有助于玩家集中精力投入激烈的战斗。
神话时代的军事结构由村民、战舰、攻城器械、普通士兵、英雄以及神话兵种组成，作为以神话故事为背景的游戏，理所当然地出现了不少神话传说中的生物，例如希腊神话中的半人马、飞马佩格萨斯、蛇发女妖美杜沙，埃及神话中的木乃伊和北欧神话中的诸多巨人和猛兽，这些生物往往体形庞大，具有相当高的HP值、攻击力和一些特殊的本领。原本只出现在征服者单人战役中的英雄兵种成为了三个文明不可缺少的军事力量。英雄是强化的普通士兵，希腊人在每个时代可以在城镇中心或城堡内训练一名英雄，有着名的赫拉克勒斯、忒修斯、珀耳修斯等等，他们分别是步兵、弓箭手、骑兵甚至是海上英雄单位，阿尔戈号。英雄能够搬运圣迹（Relic）并将其送回神庙，他们适合对抗神话兵种，有着很高的攻防加成和一些特殊本领。埃及的英雄不仅仅是对神话兵种有攻击优势的士兵，他们担任着更为重要的角色。埃及的英雄有法老和祭司，法老只能有一名，他可以在城镇中心无限复活，祭司则没有什么数量上的限制。埃及文明在游戏开局就拥有一名法老和一名祭司，祭司的训练价格非常高，在对抗普通士兵时显得力不从心。法老的战斗力远比祭司强大，但在众多的人类士兵面前也是无计可施。法老和祭司的重要用途是对抗敌方的神话兵种，以及对本方部队的治疗，包括各种攻城器械、战舰和造价昂贵的神话兵种。法老还具有对建筑物工作效率进行“加速”的能力，当法老为某个建筑加速时，该建筑的工作效率将提高20%，单位训练速度加快，科技的研究速度会相应地得到提升，纪念碑收集恩惠的速度也会加快，甚至村民交还到建筑内的资源也会出现增长。如果正在“加速”的建筑还未完工，那么法老可以加快它的建筑速度。法老无法改变的只有村民的训练速度和时代的升级。祭司和法老一样拥有远距离攻击、治疗能力和对神话兵种的巨大优势，祭司还可以建造一种高塔，以便更好地侦察附近敌情，这种高塔的建造价格非常低，而且能够在瞬间完成。在拥有了神庙以后，还可以从城镇中心训练祭司，埃及人的每个主神赋予祭司一种特殊能力，拉（Ra）的祭司能够像法老一样对建筑物进行加速，依西斯（Isis）建造纪念碑的速度较快，塞特（Set）的祭司可以招降野生动物。北欧的英雄虽然在强度上逊色于希腊英雄，但在数量上占有很大的优势，他们可以同时拥有多个英雄，北欧的英雄是赫瑟战士，他们并不象希腊英雄那么勇猛，移动速度也不是很快，但在对抗神话兵种时却能发挥显着的作用，因此用神话兵种去对付北欧人不是明智的选择。保持一队北欧英雄就能够缓慢地增加恩惠，如果将他们投入战场，他们能比普通士兵更快的积累恩惠。所有文明的英雄都能够拾取圣物。
铁匠铺里保留了传统的对应于普通士兵和英雄的军事科技，铜/青铜/铁器的武器和防具升级，每项升级可以使士兵的攻击力或防御力提高10%。
神话时代中，最能引起玩家注意的莫过于新增加的神力，各文明随着时代的进步可以获得不同的神力，有些神力可以强化作战单位的能力，有些能够提升村民工作的效率，还有一些恐怖的神力能让敌人丧失战力。每一位主神和他的从属神明都有独一无二的神力，在游戏中，玩家可以获得总共4种神力，每个时代获得一种，当然，你不必在获得神力后马上就用掉他，你可以保存起来留到关键的时刻使用。每种神力都只能使用一次，因此玩家必须注意把握好适当的时机来取得最大的收益。除了神力以外，每个主神和附属神明都拥有不同的文明优势、独特科技以及不同的神话兵种，这些单位和科技都需要足够的恩惠才可以训练和研究
